Bullet Design

Our goal from the beginning was to develop solid copper bullets that were the most accurate, flattest shooting bullet on the market that would have much better terminal performance than any other premium match grade bullet.

If you are a match shooter, you are going to love how fast, flat and accurate these bullets fly. If you are a hunter you will appreciate how quickly our bullets kill. They are precise from lot to lot with the maximum weight deviation of .40 grains on our MTH™, MTAC™ and FBH™ bullets. All our solid copper bullets are within .0001" in concentricity and .00015" in diameter. By trade we are machinists, and because of this fact all bullets are inspected rigorously at appropriate intervals and documented accordingly to ensure all bullets are the same regardless of when they are purchased.

Cutting Edge Bullets - Bullet DesignI hope when you look at our bullets you see what we see when we look at them. We see a cutting edge bullet design like nothing else on the market. When you shoot these bullets, the advanced design will prove itself worthy whether you are hunting, target shooting, or protecting our country or our citizens. I am quite sure there will be jacketed bullet manufacturers that will try to pick the design apart and tell everyone it is not good. This is due to the simple fact that they can't swage a bullet with these features. Our bullet designs were well thought out using proven data like that of Bob McCoy, a well respected modern ballistician. They were then tested using custom rifles built by a well known rifle builder, Bruce Baer, as well as standard factory rifles.

We are hunters at heart but need match quality bullets for long range shots. I know many people frown upon long range hunting and in no way are we trying to convince anyone that they should try it. After all, it does take two people, a spotter and a shooter, and a substantial amount of money in optics, guns, rests, etc. to do it correctly so as not to wound game and to also know if you hit what you are aiming at down range.

Under no circumstances do we endorse anyone with any bullet taking shots greater than 400 yards without someone spotting to see exactly where you hit. There are too many conditional factors to consider to reliably place a killing shot further than that. However, with that said, when properly equipped and with lots of practice by the shooter and spotter, much further shots are possible. We feel confident that with our bullets you will shoot better regardless of the distance you are shooting. Furthermore, we also enjoy hunting from stands, but we still like to shoot the best bullets possible to ensure we hit exactly where we aim to kill the game quickly.

No matter what your preference in hunting is, there are sometimes occasions when you hit your target where you didn't intend to due to your target moving at the moment you squeeze the trigger or some other unforeseen circumstance. This is the time when you need a bullet that will perform at its best. Our goal was to develop a bullet that would not fragment into tiny pieces if bone was hit as in front shoulder shots but yet expand rapidly when bone was not hit as in between the ribs or gut shots. Our hollow point design accomplished this beyond our expectations. There are no bullets perfect for every circumstance and we don't pretend ours are, but they certainly performed beyond our expectations when elk and deer hunting in 2009 and 2010. We recovered some of the bullets shot from a .338 Tomahawk at long range and a 300WSM at close range, that inflicted massive amounts of damage as shown and described in the pictures in our Media section from a few bull elk and deer we took. Some pass through photos are also shown on some others. Please keep in mind, if there is a warning about a hidden picture being graphic in nature, and you are bothered by such things, do not click to open the file. They are actual wound channels in animals that were taken and are very graphic in nature. They do however demonstrate how well the bullets performed.

Our philosophy of a good hunting bullet is, we are not necessarily after pass-through performance, rather we prefer inflicting a maximum amount of damage through hydrostatic shock and shrapnel to destroy internal organs. The more energy that is absorbed by the animal, the faster it will die. Some of our bullets, particularly the MTH™ D65 .338 252gr LD-HPBT-MAX-AGG bullets, do come apart as intended when only flesh or organs are hit but the pieces are large and carry through the game making multiple wound channels. This is due to hydraulic pressure from fluid entering the hollow point and causing it to split into two or more large pieces. No, they are not pretty petals like that of some other solid copper bullet manufacturers selling on the idea their bullets have controlled expansion, rather, they are a nasty looking banana shaped pieces that probably tumble and twist and god knows what as they are going through organs. This destructive performance has only been witnessed with this particular bullet at long and close range because of it's aggressive design with all other calibers and bullets resulting in classic mushrooms of 1 1/2 times the bullet diameter. Rarely, if ever, do they not pass completly through an animal on a broad side front shoulder shot.

The copper we use is softer than most typical gilding copper used by most manufacturers of solid copper projectiles and therefore splits much easier. On the flip side when they do hit bone, the bullet first enters flesh and begins to open. When it comes into contact with the bone the soft copper squashes and halts further splitting. Occasionally, the petals may separate from the bullet and go in multiple directions. The solid portion then continues through for deep penetration. Even at extreme ranges (see .338 2000 yard bull) the bullets expand well and kill quickly. For proper terminal performance, it is imparative that the tip is not damaged not allowing fluid to enter the cavity. If the tip does get dented the hole can be opened up with a paper clip.

Bullet expansion testing at transonic speeds will be performed as soon as possible and posted on this site once completed. The copper we use is also the most barrel friendly type of copper available. Fouling is minimal due to no blow by of hot gasses escaping around the bullet which softens the copper and will cause barrel plating. Unfortunately, it is also the most expensive type of copper but we feel it is not worth compromising on the quality of the materials used to save a few pennys on each bullet.

At this point the Ballistic Coefficients of our bullets are not exact but are not exaggerated. We arrived at the stated BC's by using muzzle velocity and actual bullet drops at various ranges and calculated them using Oehler's Ballistic Explorer 6.2.0 software. We do realize this is not precise but anyone that has shot long distances will see the difference in drop when compared to the bullets you are currently shooting. As we move forward we plan to get more precise BC's by using an Oehler 43 or Oehler 83 chronograph with acoustic targets set at yardages out to 800 yards. The yardages will be certified and the ballistic coefficients will be very accurate. Eventually, to get even more accurate, we will have data obtained by using Doppler Radar and post it as well. We will be posting these results on our web site, Facebook page and Twitter account. As with most bullets and especially with VLD designs, the use of multiple BC's may be required for our bullets especially at very long ranges for better accuracy. However, if we do not list variable BC's in our bullet descriptions, the posted BC will get you within 1/2 MOA even at very long ranges. New bullet calibers, designs and weights will be continually added using the same methods of communication and individuals are encouraged to check back frequently for updates.
