Hunting Bullet Comparison

Hunting Bullet Comparison

Whether you're hunting dangerous game in Africa or hunting coyotes in South Dakota, we have the hunting bullet for you. Below is a breakdown of each of our hunting bullet lines, the best applications for them, and how they are designed to function.

This was the original line we launched Cutting Edge Bullets with 8 years ago. It is a solid copper, lead-free, lathe turned design. With its high BC, it can be used for extreme long-range hunting and shooting, but works perfectly at closer ranges as well. It is an expanding bullet, but not in the traditional sense: it is designed to shed 3-6 small petals after 1-2” of penetration while the base continues through. The petals follow alongside the main wound channel to create massive trauma.

Available in calibers: .224-.550
Applications: target use, ELR, small game hunting, big game hunting
For ranges: 0-1000yds+
Functions down to:1700fps

Our latest line is the Maximus, which was designed to be a hybrid between our Raptor and MTH bullets. After 1-2” of penetration, this bullet will shed 6 blades at impact velocities over 2400fps, and 4 blades at impact velocities below 2400fps. Our Raptors all have a larger hollow point with a plastic tip installed; these were designed without the plastic tip and a smaller hollow point which creates a slightly better BC. Because these are not a 2 piece bullet like our Raptor or Lazer lines, they are also more cost effective to manufacture, thus making them less expensive for you.

Available in calibers: .224-.416
Applications: hunting
For ranges: 0-1,000yds
Functions down to: 1400fps

This is also a high BC, monolithic, lathe turned projectile that is lead-free. It is an expanding hollow point, and was designed to shed larger petals than the MTH line, delivering even more trauma on impact. Interestingly enough, they were originally designed as a hunting bullet for use inside 1000yds. However, upon further testing, it was found that although they have a BC slightly lower than the MTH/MTAC lines, they produce more consistent BC numbers from shot to shot at long ranges. This is the reason they are the #1 champion bullet in ELR (Extreme Long Range) shooting competitions.

Available in calibers: .264-.510
Applications: hunting, long range hunting, long range match shooting
For ranges: 0-1000yds+
Functions down to: 1200fps

The ER line is all copper for those in lead free areas. The Raptor bullet lines are the most terminally devastating of all our hunting bullet lines. They are designed so that after 1-2” of penetration, 6 blades will break off and radiate outward in a star pattern while the base momentum continues.

Available in calibers: .224-.375
Applications: hunting
For ranges: 0-600yds
Functions down to: 1500fps

The FB (Flat Base) Raptor and ESP (Enhanced System Projectile) Raptor are designed to function just like the ER Raptor mentioned above, but are constructed of brass instead of copper. The FB Raptor was designed to offer more case capacity for specialty cartridges such as the Subsonic 300 Blackout, supersonic 300 Blackout, .458 SOCOM and 450 Bushmaster.

The ESP Raptors are a boat tail design that can be used as a hollow point or a solid - all while being able to use the same load. Simply flip the bullet around and load as usual. These bullets come with black tips uninstalled.

Available in calibers: .224-.458
Applications: hunting
For ranges: 0-500yds
Functions down to: 1500fps

DGBR Safari Solid and DGBR-HP Safari Hollow-point are designed for dangerous game hunting. The hollow-points expand to shed 6 large petals which fracture off of the base after 2" of penetration while the base continues. The counterpart to the DGBR-HP is the DGBR Solid which has our BBW#13 nose profile. After countless rounds of testing, this nose profile was found to provide the deepest, straight line penetration of any other profile tested.

Available in calibers:  .264 – .700NE
Applications: Dangerous game hunting

Our HGHP ( Handgun Hollow point) and HGS (Handgun Solid) are an excellent choice for those hunting with handguns. The HGHP is designed to shed 4 big petals after 1-2" of penetration while the base continues. The solids provide deep, straight line penetration for extreme knock down power.

Available in calibers: .22-.510
Applications: hunting, target, personal defense
For ranges: 0-200yds
Functions down to: 700-800fps

This line features the profile and functionality of the above-mentioned Maximus line, but designed specifically for muzzleloaders. After 1-2” of penetration, 4 blades break off and radiate outward in a star pattern while the base continues for deeper penetration.

Available in calibers: .40, .45, .50
Applications: hunting
For ranges: 0-400yds
Functions down to: 1400fps
